Despicable Me 2

Saw this movie in 2D with the family at the theatre last weekend. I had mixed feelings going in, as I remembered being enchanted by the first film. I think I was suffering from an extremely taxing work week, a case of preemptive sequelitis and so I was reluctant to mingle with the world at large during opening weekend. That didn’t last. Boy did I have fun with this one.

While the plot was not as original as the first film, it was silly and sweet and just what I needed. I laughed out loud a lot and enjoyed watching my daughters enjoy themselves.

Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) is out of the villain racket, trying to make a go of it in the jam and jelly business with the help of his scene stealing minions. He is the adoptive father of moppets Margo, Edith and Agnes. He is enjoying suburban life, fending off a busibody neighbour who is trying to set him up with her sad sack friends, as he adjusts to parenthood. He is called to duty by Lucy (voiced by Kristen Wigg), an agent of the Anti-Villain League. It seems a secret super evil villain has made off with a secret serum that could mean destruction of the world as Gru knows it. He reluctantly agrees to co-operate, before you know it he is falling for Lucy and then chaos ensues to a rather satisfying conclusion.

Was it predictable? Yes, but there were plenty of sight gags along the way that made it easy to give this film a pass. The voice acting was stupendous; kudos go to Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Russell Brand and Steven Coogan. The animation was good. It made me and my family laugh and that was a great way to start the weekend.

We tried to see DM2 this weekend but the matinee was sold out. Sounds like it is worth a try again this weekend.
